Picton

On Monday, we arrived in the Queen Charlotte Sound and docked in Picton.  Picton is a very picturesque town, with very friendly inhabitants.  We were greeted by volunteers who pinned flower corsages on us as they welcomed us to their town.

Their beautiful harbour.

The main street.

There was a fantastic museum with the Edwin Fox, a preserved sailing ship,
that was used to bring immigrants from Europe to New Zealand.

A model of the ship.

The ship's hull is completely preserved.

Very cramped sleeping quarters. That's me in a bed.

Down in the hold of the ship.

This is how much the ship would list during the voyage.

The hull from underneath.

We decided to take a tour of the sound on a local cruise boat. The scenery was spectacular. We ended up in Ships Cove, which Captain Cook used as a provisioning post on several visits to the islands. There is a memorial there in his honour.

The vegetation was very dense jungle.

The sound was very picturesque.
